Abstract
The study of human intelligence
The study of intelligence embodies one of the key themes of the research
on the mind. For its vastness and polysemy, the concept of intelligence
can be investigated from various angles and with different methodologies.
The seminar will examine in a specific way the approach to intelligence
that focuses on the analysis of the differences that exist between human
beings when they are involved in cognitive tasks. It will illustrate how
the traditional line of psychometric tests have been progressively
enriched and modified by the developments of contemporary cognitive
psychology. The limits of the unitary or multiple classical global
approaches will be shown, and a hierarchical cognitivist model will be
presented. The seminar will discuss how the notions of working memory,
processing speed, and inhibitions fit into the model.
